How long should a tree remain standing before it is felled in order to make the greatest possible contribution?
This question was answered by forester Elena Schmidtmeyer in an interview:
Basically, as soon as the constitution of the tree deteriorates and it hardly grows any more, it is time to fell it. This is because it then becomes more susceptible to parasites and can absorb less and less CO2. If it is already preventing other, more valuable trees from growing or is a danger on paths or roads, for example, earlier felling is necessary and sensible. It is not possible to make a general statement in years, as different tree species have very different development times. A birch, for example, grows very quickly and is therefore usually harvested after around 70 years. An oak, on the other hand, grows very slowly and is not harvested until it is 200 years old at the earliest.
