Elena Schmidtmeyer is studying forestry engineering in Freising and is already the third generation in her family to work in and with the forest.
The forest fascinates her above all because it is an incredibly complex ecosystem with very subtle interactions between different life forms. For example, microorganisms that ensure a healthy soil structure live in secret alongside huge trees that form partnerships with fungi to achieve the optimum supply for themselves. Understanding these relationships in order to be able to use and protect them is the reason why she decided to work in and with the forest.
Another exciting aspect of the forest is the different demands that are made from all directions. Peolpe use the forest as a place for recreation, the wood processing industry has a continuous demand for wood as a raw material and a large number of living creatures depend on our forests. These must be protected and preserved. All these needs come together in one area and must be taken into account and brought in line. This is often challenging, but above all very varied.
And what could be better than spending most of your time outside in the forest? The so-called forest bathing is really becoming a new trend. Forester Elena Schmidtmeyer experiences these positive effects every day.
