How are our forests doing?

This question was answered by forester Elena Schmidtmeyer in an interview:

This question is not easy to answer, as there are major regional differences. Basically, however, it can be said that the German forest is not doing very well at the moment. It is plagued by dry years in which only a fraction of the required precipitation fell. The weakened trees then become particularly susceptible to parasites, such as bark beetles, and die as a result of their infestation, the lack of water and also storms. Young trees often seed naturally in the resulting clear areas. These are threatened by browsing due to excessive game populations in many places, e.g. roe deer, and often do not manage to grow. In addition, climate change means that tree species that have grown well in the past are no longer sustainable. The forest is therefore currently facing numerous problems, but these can be solved through action by society as a whole, first and foremost by reducing CO2 emissions.

The background to the interview:

We are committed to reforestation. One way of doing this is to make donations and to plant trees. On the other hand, we also contribute to making the topic of “reforestation” more visible to the general public. We interviewed forester Elena Schmidtmeyer and filmed a series of video clips with her that answer many interesting questions on the subject.

Why do we get involved and how exactly do we do it? Please read our separate article here.
