Is climate change affecting our forests?
This question was answered by forester Elena Schmidtmeyer in an interview:
“Yes, trees are particularly affected by climatic changes due to their longevity and site-dependency. Storms and long periods of drought weaken the forests and make them more susceptible to forest fires and parasites such as insects, e.g. bark beetles and fungi. Tree species such as pine and beech, which were previously considered relatively stable, are dying off in large areas. Many of our native tree species are not equipped to cope with such rapid climate changes. The forest is therefore definitely a victim of climate change. At the same time, however, it is also a beacon of hope in the fight against CO2 emissions.
The background to the interview:
We are committed to reforestation. One way of doing this is to make donations and to plant trees. On the other hand, we also contribute to making the topic of “reforestation” more visible to the general public. We interviewed forester Elena Schmidtmeyer and filmed a series of video clips with her that answer many interesting questions on the subject.
Why do we get involved and how exactly do we do it? Please read our separate article here.
